As the global race for artificial intelligence (AI) supremacy intensifies, the United States faces a critical challenge: meeting the surging energy demands of AI infrastructure.

Data centers, the backbone of AI operations, are projected to consume nearly half of the growth in U.S. electricity demand by 2030, surpassing traditional energy-intensive industries like steel and cement manufacturing. This escalating demand underscores the need for a robust and reliable energy supply to sustain AI advancements.

As Secretary Wright recently stated, “The AI race is Manhattan Project 2.0 — whoever controls the energy to run it, controls the future.”

Natural gas emerges as a pivotal component in addressing this energy challenge. Its ability to provide consistent, dispatchable power makes it indispensable for data centers that require uninterrupted energy to maintain operations. Regions like Western Pennsylvania are capitalizing on this by transforming former industrial sites into AI hubs powered by local natural gas resources, thereby revitalizing local economies and reinforcing the energy infrastructure essential for AI development. Without the stability and scalability of oil and gas, the U.S. risks falling behind in the AI race.

In contrast, reliance on foreign energy technologies poses significant risks. Recent discoveries of hidden “kill switches” in Chinese-manufactured solar inverters highlight vulnerabilities that could compromise national security. To mitigate such threats and ensure energy independence, the U.S. must bolster its domestic energy production, particularly in oil and gas.

This strategy not only secures the energy necessary for AI progression but also fortifies the nation’s position against geopolitical competitors like China and Russia. To win the AI war, America must first win the energy war — and that begins with unleashing its full oil and gas potential.
