What the Bible Teaches About Taxes and Responsible Government Spending
Americans are frustrated.
They object to wasteful government spending and excessive taxes that exert undue control over their lives and labor. Instead, they envision a government that embodies biblical stewardship, safeguards liberty, and upholds constitutional boundaries.
Here at FourG Media, we stand for God, Gas, Guns, & Glory, and here, we’ll focus on three of the FourG principles: God’s truth (God), recognizing economic reality (Gas), and pursuing responsible freedom (Glory).
With these commitments in mind, a biblical view of taxes and responsible government spending becomes essential.
Biblical Principles About Taxes
The Bible offers clear guidance on taxes for both the American government and its citizens.
Romans 13:6-7 affirms the government’s right to tax, but only for essential functions and in a way that respects individuals’ property rights and ownership.
In 1 Samuel 8, the prophet Samuel warns Israel that demanding a king would result in heavy taxes, highlighting the risks of excessive taxation.
Just as the government should exercise faithful tax management, taxpayers are called to honor their civic duties by paying taxes, while keeping their ultimate allegiance to God, as Jesus teaches in Matthew 22:21: “Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.”
Stewardship and Accountability
According to Scripture, the government should model the same Christian stewardship that God expects of individuals — handling resources wisely, minimizing unnecessary debt, and upholding God’s principles in fiscal planning.
The Parable of the Talents in Matthew 25:14-30 illustrates how faithful management leads to growth and blessing.
Proverbs 22:7 warns that runaway deficits and bloated budgets lead to debt, becoming a form of servitude for current and future Americans.
“The rich rules over the poor;
And the borrower is servant to the lender.”
Leaders must be accountable to both God and the people they serve, managing resources with integrity and wisdom to ensure both financial prudence and the nation’s well-being and freedom.
The Moral Limits of Government
The role of civil authority to maintain order and justice is affirmed in Scripture. However, the government must respect moral boundaries and avoid assuming roles belonging to the family, the church, and the individual. Failing to do so leads to excessive government overreach and bloated bureaucracy that undermine the social structures God has established.
Mindful of these truths, the Founders of the United States designed a government with limited authority, rooted in morality, and restrained from encroaching on the God-given roles of family, church, and individual.
Implications for America Today
Fiscal irresponsibility is both an economic and moral issue. Inflation, wasteful programs, and bureaucratic bloat harm working families, while reckless spending burdens future generations with undeserved debt.
Christians need to speak up, vote wisely, and support leaders who align with biblical and constitutional values.
At FourG Nation, let us be vigilant in tracking where our tax dollars are going and support government leaders who are committed to biblical and constitutional stewardship.
Most importantly, let us faithfully pray for our leaders while actively holding them accountable for their integrity, decisions, and stewardship of our nation’s resources.
